How These 3 Steps Will Get You More Sales (Step 3 - Waffling Around)
Being boring is something that really kills your sales.
I can’t think of anything else that’s more boring than having to read waffling stuff.
If you’ve never heard of the term “waffling”, let me give you some examples.
‘Notice And Instantly Kill Your Waffling’
“We will be meeting in the conference room at 11 o’clock. What we will be discussing is the sorry state of business writing”.
Or this one:
“I’m reaching out to you because through social media we are able to generate leads for local businesses in a very specific way.
Or this one:
I’m sure you have a lot on your table right now, and that you are very busy, so I won’t take up too much of your time. But if you could just give me a minute.
There’s a common factor in all these sentences.
Which is…
They’re WAFFLING. Speaking in tongues, pure mumbo jumbo.
If you want anything to cut right through, be clear about what you want to say..
Mistakes are often made because the message was not clear, you need to slice through all the noise and stop waffling.
‘No More Passive Language’
Using active language you’re getting right to the point. No mumbo jumbo!
So let's fix these awful sentences.
“We will be meeting in the conference room at 11 o’clock. What we will be discussing is the sorry state of business writing”.
Would be more exciting to watch paint dry than listening to this.
The Active version:
“Meeting’s at 11 in the conference room. Subject: the sorry state of business writing”
To the point, there is no question about what and where.
Next one:
“I’m reaching out to you because through social media we are able to generate leads for local businesses in a very specific way.
My god what is this?
Reaching out because we help local businesses grow through social media. Is that of any interest to you?
Again, no confusion. Get right to the point.
Last one:
I’m sure you have a lot on your table right now, and that you are very busy, so I won’t take up too much of your time. But if you could just give me a minute.
This sentence, I mean…
It’s unfixable. It makes no sense to ask anyone for their time right after you’ve just clarified that they don’t have much time.
So there it is, waffling is officially over.
Don’t be afraid to use active language, write like you’re at war, dominating the whole thing.
Talk soon,
Martin
